Charm

Okay, well not when you were flailing on the floor screaming for an hour because we used the wrong flavor of toothpaste, or cut your chicken along the wrong invisible lines, or because you didn't believe in naps at all till you were 2.5, or... but luckily you had us at "Luv. luv." and "Me luv you". You continually captivate us with your sweet and sticky self; especially when you say sor-sor (sorry) or sing.

Practice and Perseverance

Sometimes you are a big man in a little body. You can sit and listen to great books for hours. You loved Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings You are great at hammering nails or finding any screw that is out of place. You are great at puzzles and putting together very tiny pieces. You have tremendous perseverance when you put your mind to something. You have been practicing many things, especially your words. You remind us to make room for solitude and that many syllables are superfluous.

  

Play and possibility

 

Part time pirate, part time princess. Full-time Jedi. We usually find you wearing some combination of gloves, boots, hat, and cape. You are super-everything. Oh, and you want to "Chop-head-off" of just about anything.  You like to cook and often I find your recipes in unexpected places, like drawers. Sometimes you put four shoes on and are a horse named Bob, which is great because you eat unlimited apples and carrots. The down side being you like to sleep standing up-with all your shoes on! With "Kiss" (Cris) and now "Cal" (Calyn) you are a very busy guy. 

 Wonder 

"Wow." Look up. Be mesmerized.

This world is everything you were hoping it would be, and more. With dirt, rocks, bugs, turtles, and flowers around: You are going to need a lot of pockets.

Action/ re-action

What happens if I...flush my 5" boat down the toilet, pour a whole gallon of milk, tie grandma up in the closet, go down the giant water slide, pick up my feet to "ump", climb up the slide, throw a bottle of shampoo at my newborn sister's head? [Action(s)].  The grown-ups make lots of unusual faces, learn you are tough, and expand their patience [Reaction(s)].

 Five

 "Me big boy"; almost, sort of, sometimes. For most of the year, when asked how old you were or how big you were going to be on your next birthday, the answer has always been "5". Always trying to keep pace with and not be outdone by that big brother, your efforts are remarkable. And yet, you nursed almost through the whole year and often you are curled up in the foot of our bed. Now you have a new baby sister to endure and it seems mom pays more attention if you act more like her. It is muddied in the middle. Yet, we love this land of in-between! This year I hope you just feel free to be three!
